Model predictive control for a medium-head hydropower plant hybridized with battery energy storage to reduce penstock fatigue

A hybrid hydropower power plant is a conventional Hydro-Power Plant (HPP) augmented with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to decrease the wear of sensitive mechanical components and improve reliability regulation performance plant. central task controlling HPP determining how total setpoint split between BESS hydraulic turbine (power splitting). This paper describes Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework for medium- high-head HPPs splitting problem. The policy relies on an explicit formulation loads incurred by HPP’s penstock, which can be damaged due fatigue when providing grid frequency regulation. By filtering out from conducive excess penstock properly BESS, proposed MPC maintains same level while significantly decreasing damages conduits. proof-of-concept simulations provided considering 230 MW medium-head
